Evaluation of User Experience — PRO Epilepsy App

A structured UX evaluation of the PRO Epilepsy app — to improve usability and patient engagement through research, interviews, prototyping and actionable recommendations.

?
The Challenge

The purpose was to improve usability and user satisfaction for patients using the PRO Epilepsy app, developed for patients in the Capital Region and Region Zealand. Specific goals: · Gain insight into how patients actually use the app. · Increase the use and user experience of PRO Epilepsy. · Identify improvement potentials. · Identify barriers to adoption and regular use.

The Result

Sammetric designed and executed a full UX evaluation process: · Design of study framework and methodology. · Development of question guide and conduction of user interviews. · Creating mockups and prototypes of improved flows. · Solution models addressing identified pain points. · Comprehensive report with prioritised recommendations for improvement and management summary.

Background

The PRO (Patient-Reported Outcomes) Epilepsy app was developed to enable patients to regularly report their symptoms and wellbeing to their treating clinicians. Despite the clinical value of the tool, adoption and regular use were lower than expected.

The Capital Region and Region Zealand engaged Sammetric to conduct a structured evaluation of the user experience — to understand why patients weren’t using it as intended, and to identify what changes would make a meaningful difference.

Our Approach

We designed a mixed-methods evaluation framework, combining structured user interviews with observational sessions. Patients were recruited across the two regions to ensure representative coverage.

The interview guide was developed to explore three dimensions: the onboarding experience, daily use patterns, and barriers to consistent engagement. Sessions were conducted both in-person and remotely.

Findings were synthesised into a set of core pain points, each mapped to the specific stage of the user journey where it occurred. For each pain point, we created low-fidelity mockups and prototypes illustrating potential solutions — giving the development team clear, testable starting points.

Output

The engagement concluded with a management summary and a detailed recommendations report, prioritised by impact and implementation effort. The prototype models gave the product team immediate material to work from in the next development cycle.

“We have had a really good collaboration with Symmetric, who together with us have uncovered important user insights that we can use directly in our continued development of the PRO Epilepsy app.”
